abstract = "Hydrological modeling and remote sensing are very important tools
in predicting extreme scenarios and events related to the
hydrological cycle. Prior knowledge of the occurrence of floods
and droughts, and its spatial extension, gives the decision makers
the opportunity to avoid and prevent possible economic, human or
environmental damages and losses. To obtain accurate and reliable
results coming from modeling and spatialization of floods
extensions is necessary the best information regarding hydraulic
parameters of the geometry of streams such as width and depth.
Traditionally this information for large basins modeling comes
from approximations based from drainage area or discharge. Besides
the application in modeling, the knowledge of rivers width have
direct applications in ecology, construction and navigation for
example. This paper proposes an automatic calculation methodology
of river widths along the entire representable length of rivers in
raster images derived from remote sensing. To validate the method,
images from the LANDSAT 8 satellite were used to create a water
mask and perform the algorithm. The results were compared to
manual measurements of width and also to a drainage area
relationship. The results showed that the width calculated by the
proposed methodology were significantly close to the real width
and much better than the use of a drainage area relationship. It
is expected that these results reported with the use of the river
width calculation tool to be the base of various applications
where the width is a key parameter.",
